A Journey In Irpinia

Few regions transmit cultural patrimony and emotions in its food and drink more than Irpinia.

Fiano, Greco di Tufo, Falanghina and Aglianico are all locally based products of the Irpinian landscape, developing wines from it’s limestone and clay soil, very rich in sulfur, local mountainous micro-climates and high elevation.

Together with the Edi The Nose team we had the opportunity to meet some very special wine producers in the area for a wine tasting at the ancient Castle of Di Marzo and within the vineyards of Montemarano:

§Cantine Di Marzo

§Cantine Dell’Angelo

§Cantina Del Barone

§Azienda Vitivinicola Il Cancelliere

§Azienda Agricola Torricino

§Cantina Terre D’Aione

§Azienda Agricola Colline Del Sole

§Cantine Monte Gloria

§Distilleria Carpentino

With medium straw gold color in the glass, the Greco bursts with aromas of mango, grapefruit, tangerine, cinnamon and white tea. The complex minerals in the soil emerge in the wine as a mix of savory spice, star anise and wintergreen. A honeyed mid-palate is accenting citrus and tropical fruit. The Greco’s finish is again full of complex spice, almond and juicy tropical fruit expressions.

Good local food could not miss from this social gathering. Jumbo green olives, fresh and dried tomatoes, along with several chees types from the area and home-made ham were just perfect to enhance the wine even more. A good piece of bread with localy produced olive oil was enjoyed by everyone, both as a started and an after lunch délicatesse.

But our journey continues to Montemarano, homeland of Aglianico and Taurasi. Closing the day with this marvelous wines at sunset was the perfect match for this perfect day in Irpinia.
